MALDEN – All three Tufts University men's rowing eights finaled and the third varsity eight won its competition against Bates, Wesleyan and UMass at Malden River on Saturday.
Tufts' first varsity eight defeated Bates 5:54.5 to 5:58.8 in the Jumbos' first race of the day. The Jumbo second varsity eight also won a close race against Bates 6:16.1 to 6:19.8. The third varsity eight made it a sweep of the Bobcats with a 6:15.1 to 6:27.0 victory.
Into the final in all three categories, Tufts' 1V8 was defeated 5:55.9 to 5:59.9 by Wesleyan. The Cardinals also won over the Jumbos in the second varsity final with a time of 6:16.8 to 6:32.6 for the hosts.
In the third varsity eight final, the Jumbos won with a 6:20.9 time over UMass' novice eight (6:30.3).
The Jumbo 3V8, which improved to 4-0 on the season, Tufts lined up with Nilay Maity as coxswain, stroke Peter Malinovsky, 7 Ethan Donnelly, 6 Samson Braun, 5 Henry Ross, 4 Matias Facciuto, 3 David Gantt, 2 Tamas Takata and bow Aidan Bauer.
For the first varsity, the Jumbo boating was coxswain James Grant, stroke Rick Boer, 7 Mats Edwards, 6 Ryan Bell, 5 Alex Williams, 4 Nick Hartman, 3 Jordan Bacher, 2 Harris Hardiman-Mostow and bow James Miller.
The second varsity for Tufts sat with coxswain Tara Coleran, stroke Matt Agurcia, 7 Alec Whipple, 6 Isaac Mudge, 5 Rich Gilland, 4 Ted Midthun, 3 Mitch Koganski, 2 Malcolm Zuckerman and bow Paul Gelhaus.
The Jumbos also celebrated Seniors Day as these were the last home races of the year. Honored were Bacher, Bell, Braun, Gilland, Grant, Hartman, Midthun, Miller, Mudge, Takata and Whipple.
Tufts has its annual Baker Cup race against WPI at Lake Quinsigamond a week from Sunday. Skidmore and the University of Rhode Island will also be competing.
