1st, 2nd and 3rd Varsity Eights All Victorious in Opening Day Races for Men's Rowing

Stroke Ryan Bell helped the 2V8 to a pair of convincing wins

MALDEN – On Saturday at Malden River, the Tufts University men's rowing team won its first, second and third varsity competitions against Coast Guard, Williams and Middlebury for a strong opening day performance.

The four teams competed in semi-final races with the winners moving on to face each other in a final and the loser's rowing off for third place.

In the first men's semi-final of the day, the Jumbo varsity eight defeated Middlebury 6:37.01 to 6:42.15 in a tight race. Williams edged Coast Guard 6:15.05 to 6:16.33 in the other semi-final. In the final, the Jumbos won by less than two seconds over the Ephs (6:21.31 to 6:23.88).

Tufts' first varsity boating was James Grant as coxswain, Andrew MacMillen as stroke and then Nick Hartman, Rich Gilland, Adrian Tanner, Tyler Hagedorn, Mats Edwards, Rick Boer and Ashton Knight.

In the second varsity eight races, the Jumbos won by more than 30 seconds over Middlebury in the semi-finals 6:44.42 to 7:14.96. Williams earned the victory over Coast Guard in the other semi-final to face Tufts in the final. There the Jumbos again won handily 6:28.19 to 6:49.23.

Rowing for Tufts in the 2V8 was Josh Kaltman as cox, Ryan Bell at stroke and Rohail Rai, Harris Hardiman-Mostow, Jordan Bacher, Isaac Mudge, James Miller, Paul Gelhaus and Thomas Hendrickson.

The Jumbos earned the sweep in the third varsity eight contest. For the semis, the Jumbos had a narrow 6:52.36 to 6:55.40 win over Coast Guard. The Tufts first novice was also in this bracket, but lost to Williams in the semi-finals 6:51.70 to 6:56.46. The Jumbo 3V8 won the final 7:01.81 to 7:12.28 against Williams. The Tufts first novice boat won the consolation race against Coast Guard with a 6:51.97 mark.

The line-up for Tufts' 3V8 was Henry Fernandez, Peter Malinovsky, Ryan Magnuson, Mitch Koganski, Sam Agnew, Michael Thramann, Alec Whipple, Tamas Takata and Ross Hamilton.

The novice boat had Nina Benites, Jack Telman, Charles Cornillie, Jack Fraser, John DiGiacomo, Colin Lata, August Fagerheim, Michael Eve and Michael Wrede.

The Tufts novice boat also had a 7:02.28 to 7:59.70 win over Middlebury to start the day's races.

The Jumbos continue a busy opening weekend with races against Amherst and UMass on Sunday at Malden River.
