Andrew Dowton got 12 minutes in off the bench for Tufts

MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's basketball team allowed just 11 points in the first half and led comfortably throughout most of the contest as the Jumbos posted a 69-39 victory over UMass Boston in non-league action Tuesday night at Cousens Gym.

The Jumbos led 28-11 at halftime as the Beacons turned the ball over 16 times and shot just five for 19 (26.3 percent) from the field. Tufts used an early 11-0 run to take a 13-4 lead following a Matt Lanchantin (Natick, MA) jumper at 9:31 of the first half. The Beacons got within seven points at 13-6 following a jumper by Michael Mitchell Jr. (Boston, MA) at 6:45, but that's the closest they would be for the rest of the night. Tufts established a double-digit lead for good when senior tri-captain Matt Galvin (Floral Park, NY) scored on a lay-up to make it 20-9 with 4:49 to go until halftime.

Galvin's five points at halftime paced Tufts, which had nine players score points and shot 10 for 22 (45.5 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes. The Jumbos scored 18 of their 28 first-half points off turnovers. Mitchell had six points, six rebounds and a steal at the break for the Beacons.

The second half was more of the same. The Jumbo margin surpassed 20 points (33-11) when junior Amauris Quezada (New York, NY) hit a three at 18:07. UMass Boston cut it down to 17, 41-24, on a three-pointer by freshman M.J. Bentley (Orlando, FL) at 13:55. The Jumbos netted the next eight points though to go back up by 25. Their lead hit 30 (63-33) on a jumper by freshman Tom Folliard (Richmond, VA) at 4:33.

Tufts was led by 12 points and six rebounds apiece from junior Alex Orchowski (Cornwall, NY) and Lanchantin. All 12 Jumbos who played scored points, including four points and two rebounds from junior center Peter Saba (Winchendon, MA). Freshman guard Kwame Firempong (Inglewood, CA) had seven assists to go with seven points.

Mitchell finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Beacons, who shot 28 percent (14/50) for the night. Bentley scored 10 points and junior Isaac Jenkins (Pordenone, Italy) finished with eight points and four rebounds.

Tufts (11-9) returns to NESCAC action on Friday night at Amherst College. UMass Boston (8-12) plays a Little East game on Saturday at Eastern Connecticut.
