MEDFORD - The Tufts University golf team has established itself as one of the top four programs in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). In each of the last two seasons, head coach George Pendergast's Jumbos have been one of just four teams in the confernece to qualify for the NESCAC Championship tournament.
Now the Jumbos want to take the next step. Four of the five starters from the Tufts team that played in the NESCAC Championship last spring are back and the depth of the roster is better than ever. Adding to their enthusiasm, Tufts will host the NESCAC Qualifier at their home course of Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Mass this fall. It's the first time Tufts has hosted the conference qualifier, from which the top four teams advance to the conference finals in the spring. The winnner of the qualifier hosts the conference championship.
Senior Brandon Karr and juniors Alex Honigford, Henry Hughes and Harry Theodore lead Tufts into the new season. For the nine tournaments on Tufts' 2018-19 schedule, Karr and Honigford were low man three times each and Hughes twice. Karr's 148 (75-73) at Trinity's Detrick Invitational matched the lowest tournament score by a Jumbo last season. Honigford's fourth-place with 74-78-152 scores at Mass.-Dartmouth's Lafrance Hospitality Invitational last spring was the best Jumbo finish of the year. Theodore scored 148 (76-72) at the NESCAC Qualifier in the fall 2018 and Hughes twice carded two-day 149s.
The 2019-20 season begins this weekend at Trinity's annual Detrick Invitational to be played at Indian Hill Country Club in Newington, Conn. The NESCAC Qualifier on Tufts' home course is scheduled for September 28-29.
