MEDFORD – After scoring five goals last week - including two game-winning goals and two game-tying goals – senior Gigi Tutoni of the Tufts University has been selected as the Longstreth / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Offensive Player of the Week.
On Monday, Tutoni was selected as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her role in helping the Jumbos win three conference contests. Ranked third in the NFHCA DIII poll, head coach Tina Mattera's Jumbos are now 5-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall.
The Jumbos got the busy week started with an 8-0 win over Wesleyan on Tuesday. Tutoni scored two of the Jumbos' first three goals at 4:24 and 8:57 of the first half to help Tufts open up a 6-0 lead after 35 minutes of play. It was the third two-goal game of her career.
The fourth two-goal game of her career came on Saturday, when Tufts topped #16 Amherst 3-2 in overtime. With the Jumbos trailing 2-1, she tallied 15 minutes into the second half to tie the game at 2-2. Into overtime, Tutoni lifted Tufts to the win by scoring less than two minutes into the extra frame.
Closing the key conference week against Hamilton on Sunday, the Jumbos fell behind on an early Hamilton goal two minutes into play. That score held up until halftime. However, six minutes into the second half, Tutoni scored unassisted to tie the game at 1-1. The Jumbos would go on to win 2-1.
Tutoni leads the Jumbos and is tied for seventh in NESCAC with six goals. Three of them have been game-winners, including in a 2-1 win against Babson in a showdown between top 10 teams on September 11. She's active offensively as her 41 shots are third in the conference.
Tutoni is already the second Jumbo to earn a national Player of the Week honor. Senior Natalie Bettez of the women's cross country team earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Athlete of the Week on September 25.
