Baseball Gets 20 Hits in 17-2 Spring Trip Victory at Averett University

DANVILLE, Va. – The Tufts University baseball team finished with 20 hits and senior R.J. Hall pitched six strong innings as the Jumbos won 17-2 at Averett Universtiy on Tuesday afternoon.

Justin Mills had four hits and scored four runs for Tufts.

Thirteen different Jumbos had hits including a four-hit day at the top of the batting order by junior CF Justin Mills, who also scored four times. Senior catcher Harrison Frickman finished 3 for 4 with a pair of triples, three rbis and two runs.

Hall improved to 2-0 this spring allowing just six hits, no walks and one run. Freshman Luke Gustavson and sophomore Jamie Weiss both threw an inning of scoreless relief for Tufts.

The Jumbos (6-1) opened with a five-fun first, extending their scoring advantage against their opponents in the opening frame to 20-0 this spring. Sophomore 1B Ryan Daues singled home a run and scored in the first. Eleven Jumbos batted in the inning.

Averett's first hit was a single by sophomore LF Tucker Majetic in the second, but Hall picked him off second base after he got there due to an errant pick-off throw at first.

Tufts executed a double steal as part of their two-run third inning which put them up 7-0. Mills stole second and Frickman stole home. The brown and blue pushed their lead to 9-0 in the fourth on Frickman's two-run triple to center.

A double by Cougar junior DH Cody Jones followed by a single from sophomore 1B Tanner Bradshaw was some two-out noise in the bottom of the fourth, but Hall got a ground ball to quell the threat.

Mills doubled in both the fifth and sixth innings as Tufts built its margin to 15-1. Sophomore 2B Will Burgess hit a two-run double in the sixth and Frickman's second triple also plated a run in Tufts' five-run sixth.

Averett had scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth off Hall when Majetic (2 for 2) singled and scored on a single by sophomore Ryan Taylor. The Cougars added an unearned run in the eighth on a one-out walk by junior Zack DeCarlo and a Jumbo outfield error.

Tufts scored its last two in the ninth including junior 3B Harrison O'Brien legging out an infield single for the first hit of his career and scoring. Freshman catcher Connor Bowman had his first career rbi on a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Ryan Noone was another Jumbo earning his first collegiate hit and rbi today. Sophomore Kyle Cortese also had his first career rbi.

Junior DH Ryan Day and junior RF J.P. Knight each had two hits for Tufts, while Knight scored three times. Day, Frickman and junior infielder Elias Varinos scored two runs each. Burgess finished with three rbis.
