MEDFORD – For throwing a gem in the Tufts University baseball team's 5-0 win at Bates College on Friday, junior right-hander R.J. Hall has been selected as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Pitcher of the Week.
This marks the second time this year and third time in his career that Hall has received the award. He was chosen earlier this season on April 16, as well on March 28 during his freshman year in 2016. This is the third consecutive week that a Jumbo player has been honored by the league. After Hall was recognized two weeks ago, senior RF Malcolm Nachmanoff was named Player of the Week last week. It's the fourth weekly honor for head coach John Casey's team overall as senior 1B Nick Falkson earned Player of the Week on March 19.
Tufts entered its three-game NESCAC East Division series at Bates needing two wins to qualify for the upcoming conference tournament. Hall delivered the first by going eight innings allowing just two hits and no runs with 13 strikeouts. He surrendered only a two-out first inning single and a two-out base hit in the second. Hall did not allow a hit from the third through the eighth innings and retired the final 13 batters he faced.
The Jumbos won the series two games to one to clinch both a spot in the tournament as well as their fifth straight NESCAC East Division pennant. Tufts is 17-14 overall and won the East with an 8-4 mark.
In seven starts for Tufts this season, Hall is 5-2 with a 2.81 earned run average. In 51.1 innings (third-most in NESCAC), he has 47 strikeouts to rank second in the conference. He is 3-1 in NESCAC East starts with a 2.59 era and 30 K's in 31.1 innings.
Hall and the rest of the Jumbos will compete for their third consecutive NESCAC championship at the 2018 tournament hosted by Trinity College May 11-13.
