Fan The Fire to Ignite Again on February 4 at Tufts Basketball Games and Track & Field Meet

MEDFORD - Fan The Fire, Tufts University's new initiative to promote Jumbo pride and active citizenship, is red-hot and another event is right around the corner. On February 4, the Jumbo basketball and track & field teams will be the main attractions for the next Fan The Fire Event.

The Tufts basketball teams face Amherst College, with the women's game at 2 pm and the men's game at 4 pm. The men's and women's track & field teams are also hosting an invitational at the Gantcher Center beginning at 11 am. From the basketball court, through Chase intramural gym and over to the track complex, Fan The Fire's Spirit, Sports, Service will be active all day.

As usual, free Fan The Fire t-shirts will be given out at both the track & field meet and the basketball games.

The basketball games will feature halftime contests at both games for gift certificates to the Tufts bookstore. There will be a contest sign-up area in Cousen Gym lobby. Right before halftime at each game, the contestants will be selected and called down to the floor. Winners will receive $100 Tufts Bookstore gift certificates.

The track & field meet will include a "Race for Kids," which will start at noon and is a great opportunity for alumni with young children to come and participate. The annual "Has-Been Mile" raced by Tufts track alumni will also take place. The winner of the "Race for Kids" will get a few small prizes, and the winner of the "Has-Been Mile" also gets a $100 Tufts Bookstore gift certificate.

For the February 4 event, Fan the Fire is partnering with Engineers Without Borders (EWB). Tufts has a student chapter of EWB, which collaborates with the School of Engineering to design sustainable development projects for communities around the world and to engage students, faculty and the campus in the process. The group is currently working on projects in Ecuador, El Salvador and Uganda.

Fan the Fire: Spirit, Sports, Service celebrates Jumbo pride and energizes the spirit of active citizenship across the entire Tufts community. Rooted in the tradition of public service at Tufts Athletics, it is inspired by the many charitable activities that teams are currently undertaking.

Three successful Fan The Fire events have been held in 2011-12, at Tufts soccer and basketball double-headers along with at a Tufts hockey game. Jumbos can now "Fan the Fire" again by joining the crowd at Tufts Basketball and Track & Field's event to show your support for the Jumbos and the causes they embrace on February 4!
