MEDFORD, Mass. – Women's Cross Country's Natalie Bettez has been named NESCAC Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week following her performance at the NEICAAA Championship.
Bettez was the Jumbo's top finisher on the day, coming in 11th overall with a time of 18:23. The race consisted of athletes throughout divisions I, II, and III. With her finish, Bettez was the top performer out of all Division III competitors.
She helped pace a Tufts team that came in 11th out of 28 teams, to finish in the top half of competing teams in all three of their events so far this season.
Bettez is off to a fantastic start to her junior campaign. In the first race of the year at the Bates Invitational on September 16 she helped her team come in first place with a finish of third overall. She separated herself from the next finisher by almost a full 30 seconds as she ran an 18:20.9.
The following weekend at the Purple Valley Classic she was the Jumbo's top finisher when she came in seventh overall with a time of 22:43.1. Tufts came in seventh out of 26 teams on that day.
This is coming after an incredible sophomore season last year when Bettez finished in Tufts' top two finishers in all seven races she competed in. Her best performance of the year was when she came in second overall and was the first Jumbo to cross the finish line at the NESCAC Championship.
This is the first time Bettez has won the award in her collegiate career. The last Jumbo to be recognized was Brittany Bowman when she won the Division III New England Regional Championship last year and was awarded for the week of November 14.
Bettez's next action will be when her and the team travel to Waterford, Connecticut next weekend to take part in the Connecticut College Invitational.
