Volleyball Receives 9th NCAA Berth, Headed to Regional at Johnson & Wales

MEDFORD - Head coach Cora Thompson's Tufts University volleyball team earned its ninth NCAA Division III Championship berth and the third in the last four years today when the Jumbos received an at-large invitation into the 2017 tournament field.

Tufts (22-6) will travel to Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in Providence, Rhode Island for an eight-team NCAA Regional later this week. The Jumbos will play the University of Massachusetts-Boston (15-15) in the first round. The match is the first of the weekend to be played at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

Undefeated host JWU (32-0) will play Elms (19-9) on Friday at 8 p.m., Wesleyan (21-5) takes on Wellesley (22-6) Friday at 5:30 p.m. and MIT (28-2) goes against Maine Maritime Academy (20-12) on Friday at 3 p.m. in the other first-round matches at the site. Saturday's semifinals are scheduled for 2:30 and 5 p.m. The championship match is Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, $3 for children (12-under) and children under two are free. Tickets sales are cash only and can be purchased the day of the game at the Wildcat Center.

The teams will be playing for a berth into the NCAA Quarterfinals to be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan November 16-18.

Tufts won its second NCAA Regional last season at home, defeating Springfield College 3-1 in the final. The Jumbos then made their second appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and went five sets before losing to Southwestern (Texas). 

The Jumbos, who were the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) runner-up this fall, have an 11-8 record overall in their eight previous NCAA berths (1996, 2005, 2008-11, 2014, 2016). They advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2009 as well.

The UMass Boston Beacons won the Little East Conference Championship to receive an automatic berth into the NCAA's. It is the eighth NCAA berth for UMass Boston, who has compiled a 13-7 mark in their previous national tournament appearances.
