Jumbos Suffer Setback to Illinois Wesleyan in Barker Chevrolet Classic Tournament Play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In their third game of the Barker Chevrolet Classic II the Tufts volleyball team fell to host, No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan, 3-1, at the Shirk Center on Saturday morning.

The Jumbos are now 6-4 with the setback.  Illinois-Wesleyan improves to 10-4 with the win. 

The Titans took the first set, 25-18, but the Jumbos responded with a win in set two, 25-20, to even the match at one.  But, the Titans were too much for the Jumbos to handle and they took the third set, 25-20 and the fourth, and match clinching set, 25-12. 

Junior Mackenzie Bright led the Jumbos with ten kills and sophomore Brigid Bell turned in eight of her own.  Sophomore Heather Holz finished with five kills and three blocks and classmate Christina Nwankpa added five blocks of her own.  Senior captain and sophomore Rachel Fruash each turned in 11 digs for the Jumbos and Bell added eight in addition to junior Katie Zheng turning in eight digs of her own.  Junior Angela Yu and Furash took care of the setting for the Jumbos, finishing with 13 and 16 assists, respectively.

Tyler Brown was the offensive leader for the Titans, finishing with 18 kills and also adding 19 digs to her efforts.  Maddie Williams added 13 kills and six blocks and Kyleigh Block finished with 11 kills and 15 digs. Kira Jackson did most of the setting for the Titans, finishing with 31 assists, and Caitlin Meyer added 19. 

The Jumbos wrap up tournament play with a 2 pm match against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.  The hosts take on Cornell College at 3:30 pm.
