|Senior co-captain Kendall Lord recorded 34 assists, eight digs and seven block assists
MEDFORD - Sophomore Kelly Brennan (Burr Ridge, IL) hammered home 23 kills and Tufts produced 14 blocks as the Jumbo volleyball team won 3-1 against Wesleyan University in a NESCAC match on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym during Homecoming Day.
Following a four-set win over Connecticut College on Friday night, Tufts improves to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the league with a weekend sweep of conference matches. Wesleyan, which was led by 11 kills from junior Kim Farris (Atlanta, GA), dropped to 4-8 and 0-5 in the league.
Set scores were 25-15, 24-26, 25-12, and 25-20.
Brennan had six kills and no errors as Tufts took the first-set win. Senior tri-captain Kendall Lord (LaJolla, CA) and sophomore Juliana Goodbar (Berkeley, CA) both had three block assists in the match. The Jumbos led just 14-11 in the middle of the match before finishing strong. Brennan's kills closed it.
In a tight second set, Wesleyan scored the final two points on a kill by senior tri-captain Laura Volgenau (Glastonbury, CT) and a block by first-year Abby Southam (Santa Monica, CA) and junior Kate Centofanti (Cos Cob, CT). Farris had six kills and sophomore Claire Larson (Chanhassen, MN) made five digs in the set.
Tufts dominated the third behind five kills from Brennan and four by sophomore Jessica Ingrum (Highlands Ranch, CO). The Jumbos hit .458 in the set, compared to .036 by the Cardinals.
The Jumbos scored the final six points of the fourth set to come from behind for the win behind Lord's service. Six kills from Brennan topped the Jumbos in the set, while first-year Carolina Berger (Fort Lauderdale, FL) finished with six digs.
Sophomore Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, CA) added 10 kills to the Tufts attack. Lord served three of Tufts' seven aces and accumulated 34 assists. She also had seven block assists. Junior Virginia Clay (Santa Clara, CA) made 12 digs for the Jumbos, while Goodbar was in on eight block assists.
Southam hit at .333 with seven kills and two errors in 15 attempts for Wesleyan. First-year Sofia Davila (Encino, CA) had a match-high 19 digs, while Volgenau added five block assists.
Tufts plays UMass Boston next on Tuesday night. Wesleyan is at Amherst next Friday night.
