MEDFORD – Four members of the Tufts University women's outdoor track & field team were in action at the MIT Final Qualifier on Thursday night.
The meet was the last chance for these Jumbos to post qualifying marks for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Geneva, Ohio May 25-27. The top 16 relays and the top 20 individuals earn berths into the national championship meet. None of the four Jumbo competitors were able to get their marks into that range this evening.
Junior Jennifer Sherwill had a PR of 136'4" (41.56m) in the discus throw, which placed third in the meet. Her previous best had been 133'7" (40.72m). Today's mark could get Sherwill into the national top 50 for the season.
In the 100-meter hurdles, junior Annalisa DeBari ran 14.93 seconds to finish fourth overall at MIT. Her 14.75 season-best time currently ranks 29th in Division III as of 9:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Freshman Julia Kissel threw the javelin 126'0" (38.41) for sixth place at the MIT Final Qualifier. Her season-best stands at 130'2" (39.69m), ranked 33rd in the country.
Freshman Nehalem Kunkle-Read ran 1:06.83 in the 400-meter hurdles for fifth place at tonight's meet.
Entering Thursday night, Tufts junior Brittany Bowman was within the NCAA top 20 in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Her 10K season-best of 35:37.17 was ranked eighth and the 17:01.27 that she ran in the 5K was 18th.
The official NCAA qualifying list is due on Saturday morning.
