MEDFORD - Senior co-captain Alexis Harrison of the Tufts University Women's Indoor Track & Field team was announced today as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division III Athlete of the Week after her performance at the New England DIII Championships.
Harrison scored in three events for the Jumbos on Saturday (Feb. 20) at the New England DIII meet hosted by Middlebury College. She added 21 points to Tufts' team total of 52 points which tied the Jumbos for fourth place at the meet.
Most impressively, Harrison won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds. The mark established a new meet and Tufts record. Her 7.71 time in the preliminaries on Saturday improved her own school record of 7.75 from earlier this season. The 7.63 in the final lowered her school record and beat the 7.74 New England Division III meet record held by Alexis Walker from Wesleyan since 2014. The time, which gave Harrison the second New England D3 Indoor 60 meters title of her career, is currently ranked second in the country.
NESCAC's Most Outstanding Performer at last spring's conference championship, Harrison also scored in the 200 meters and the long jump on Saturday. Her 25.798 finish in the 200 meters was third, just 0.007 out of second place. The time ranks 23rd nationally. She also landed a 17'8" (5.38m) in the long jump for fourth place.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to eight collegiate indoor track & field athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and the NJCAA).
