HARTFORD – The Tufts University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2018-19 season with an 8-1 NESCAC victory indoors at Trinity College on Saturday afternoon.

The eighth-ranked Jumbos swept the three doubles matches and then had wins in third and first singles to secure the victory with a 5-0 score before playing out the next four matches.

The Jumbo #2 doubles pair of sophomore Kiara Rose with freshman Nicole Frankel were quick 8-1 winners over Lily Everett and Janie Weber from Trinity. Tufts freshmen Maggie Dorr and Caroline Garrido were nearly as efficient with an 8-2 win in first doubles. The Jumbos earned the #3 doubles win with freshman Anna Lowy and sophomore Patricia Obeid doing the honros 8-3.

Garrido - ranked 31st nationally in singles entering the spring - was the first singles player to win for Tufts, defeated Krista Jiranek 6-0 and 6-1 on the third court. Tufts clinched the team victory when Dorr posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Martha Drausnik at #1.

The lone Bantam victory came in second singles where Julia Brogan went three sets to outlast Obeid 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. The Jumbos closed out play with wins by Rose at #4 (6-1, 6-0), Lowy at #5 (6-3, 6-3) and Frankel at #6 (8-5).

Head coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos depart on their spring break trip next weekend and open play at Redlands on Monday, March 18. Trinity will be in California at that time as well and starts with a match at Whittier on the 18th.
