MEDFORD – The #16 Tufts women’s tennis team has been
selected to compete in the NCAA DIII Women’s Tennis
Championships. The women will face off against University of
Scranton on Friday at Williams College in first round play.
Match times will be announced on Tuesday.
The tournament is single-elimination and begins at regional sites this weekend. Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges will be hosting the team championship finals, which are scheduled for May 19-21. Fifty total teams have been selected for the tournament, with 39 automatically qualifying from conference championships and the rest receiving at-large selections.
The Jumbos are one of five NESCAC teams competing in the tournament, as Bowdoin, Middlebury and Williams all also received at-large bids. Amherst was the automatic qualifier, after winning the NESCAC tournament this past weekend.
Scranton holds an 11-6 record this season, and earned its way into the tournament by winning the Landmark Conference Championship. The winner of the match between the Jumbos and the Royals will face #14 Skidmore who received a first round bye.
Also joining the women at the Williams regional will be Staten Island and Ithaca, who face off on Friday in first round play as well. The winner of that match will take on the Williams on Saturday in second round play. Regional play concludes on Sunday with third round play with the winner of the Williams and Ithaca/Staten Island match taking on the winner of the Skidmore and Scranton/Tufts match.
This is the 14th consecutive year the women's tennis team has made the NCAA tournament. The Jumbos will be looking for their eighth consecutive opening round win in NCAA play. Last year the women topped Elizabethtown, 5-0, in second round play after receiving a first round bye.
