Women's Tennis Notches Second Conference Win of Weekend by Topping Hamilton

Samantha Gann helped the Jumbos to an 8-1 conference win over Hamilton on Sunday

CLINTON, NY – The Tufts women's tennis team closed out a strong NESCAC weekend on Sunday as they topped Hamilton College, 8-1.  The win is the second conference win of the weekend for the Jumbos, as they cruised past Colby at home on Friday afternoon.

The women jumped out to an early lead against the Continentals, taking two of three doubles matches.  At #2 doubles the duo of freshman Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) and senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) cruised past Hamilton's pair of Mira Khanna and Clare Keyte, 8-2.  The match at #3 doubles went the Jumbos way by the same score, as rookie Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and sophomore Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) downed Liz Detwiler and Emily Chan.

Though the match at #1 doubles was extremely close, senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and first-year Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, IL) battled Weiling Tang and Isabella Schoning, but ended up falling to the hosts, 9-8(5).

The Jumbos used the early 2-1 lead after doubles play to bring a strong force into singles play and earn wins at all six singles positions.  Gann took the courts at #1 singles and topped Khanna, 6-2, 6-4.  Playing at #2 singles, Meltzer had little trouble with Schoning, winning, 6-0, 6-4. Calabro took on Tang at #3 singles, and was able to earn the win for the Jumbos, 6-3, 6-2.

Bowman continued the Jumbos momentum, topping Keyte at #4 singles, 6-2, 6-2.  Baum also contributed a win, playing at #5 singles and beating Sara Shaughnessy, 8-1.  Rounding out the Jumbos singles lineup was Worley, who also helped the Jumbos with an 8-4 win over the host's Rachel Friedman.

With the win the Jumbos move to 6-5 on the season, and improve to 2-1 in NESCAC play.  The Continentals are now 10-4 this season, with a 0-3 conference mark.  Tufts will return to action on April 9 when they travel to Wesleyan for a 3:00 pm NESCAC battle. Hamilton plays again on this evening when they host SUNY Geneseo at 6:00 pm, and will return to conference play on April 12 when they host Colby.
