BROWNE IN SINGLES, BROWNE/BOWMAN IN DOUBLES BEGIN NCAA WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAY
MEDFORD - Defending NCAA Division III singles champion Julia
Browne (Old Brookville, NY) of the Tufts women's tennis team will
put her title on the line May 27-29 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, California. Browne was one of
the 32 singles players selected to play in the 2011 NCAA Singles
Championship, while she and teammate Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX)
were one of 16 duos chosen for the NCAA Doubles draw.
On Friday (May 27), Browne will have a busy day. She begins NCAA Singles play with a 9 am round-of-32 match against Courtney Goimarac of the University of Mary Washington. The winner will move on to play either Abby Olbrich from Linfeild or Jennifer Kung of Chicago at 1 pm Friday.
NCAA Doubles play also begins on Friday. Browne and Bowman will take on Jenny Liles and Kate Stanford from Sewanee in a round of 16 match at 4 pm. The winner will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 pm against a pair from either Gustavus Adolphus or Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Play in both the NCAA singles and doubles brackets continues through Sunday.
Browne has played in the NCAA Singles Championship in each of her four seasons at Tufts. A year ago in Virginia, she won the national title in a dominating display of tennis. Over three days and six matches, she did not lose a set while cruising to the title. In the final, she was a 6-2, 7-5 winner against Grace Baljon from Williams College. Browne has a 9-2 overall record in NCAA Singles play. She advanced to the quarterfinals in 2009 and to the round of 16 in 2008.
This year, Browne has a 19-6 record in singles play. She has victories against NCAA qualifiers Kellen Alberstone of Bowdoin, Victoria Aiello of Middlebury, Kate Stanford of Sewanee, Ellen Yeatman of Washington and Lee and Kristin Alotta of Williams.
A third-year NCAA Doubles participant, Browne will join with Bowman after three very successful seasons with former teammate Meghan McCooey. The new duo found success together quickly and have posted a 20-7 record for the 2010-11 season. During the team's spring break trip, the Browne/Bowman combo posted doubles victories against pairings from Emory, Washington and Lee and Sewanee that earned NCAA berths.
Browne has appeared in two previous NCAA Doubles Championships. She and McCooey played into the semi-finals last season. They won two Intercollegiate Women's Tennis Association Small College Doubles titles together.
