WOMEN'S TENNIS TO FACE AMHERST IN QUARTERFINAL ROUND OF NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP ON TUESDAY

MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's tennis team will play NESCAC rival Amherst College for the second time this season on Tuesday (May 24), except this time the teams will meet on the other side of the country. The match is an NCAA Championship Quarterfinal, which will be played at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremeont, California beginning at 9 am.

The Jumbos (16-5) are playing in the national quarterfinals for the first time in team history. After receiving their 11th consecutive NCAA Championships berth, Tufts was sent to Maryland for the first two rounds and easily won that regional tournament. Earning a first-round bye, the Jumbos defeated Hunter 5-0 in the second round on May 14 and then eliminated Johns Hopkins 5-1 on May 15.

The winner of Tuesday's Tufts-Amherst (18-2) match will play either Emory University (21-4) or Washingon & Lee University (20-6) in the NCAA semi-finals on Friday at 11 am. Williams (19-3), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (21-3), Chicago (19-3) and Denison (18-4) are on the other side of the "Elite 8" bracket. The two semi-final winners will meet for the NCAA title on Sunday at 10 am.

The Jumbos lost 5-4 to Amherst in a NESCAC match on April 19. Among Tufts' school-record 16 victories this season are wins over Chicago and Washingon & Lee. Tufts has a 12-10 record all-time in NCAA Tournaments since receiving their first berth in 2001.
