JUMBOS OUT AT NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN'S TENNIS SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

CLAREMONT, CA - The successful 2010-11 Tufts University women's tennis season ended on Saturday at the NCAA Div. III Singles and Doubles Championships as senior Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) was eliminated in singles, and Browne with first year Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) were knocked out in doubles.

Browne had opened Saturday's play tremendously with a 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal victory over talented Amherst first year Jordan Brewer. However, Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) - one of the host schools - ended Browne's run in the semi-finals by 6-3, 6-1 scores.

In doubles play on Saturday, Browne and Bowman won the first set of their quarterfinal match against CMS's Lim and her sister Crystal 7-6 (3), but lost the next two 6-2 and 6-4.

Friday had been a successful first day at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships for Tufts. Browne opened the defense of her 2010 NCAA Singles title by winning a round of 32 match against Courtney Goimarac of the University of Mary Washington 6-2, 6-2. She moved on to play Jennifer Kung of Chicago in the round of 16 and won that match easily as well, 6-2 and 6-3.

In doubles play which also began on Friday, Browne and Bowman took on Jenny Liles and Kate Stanford from Sewanee in a round of 16 match. After dropping the first set 6-3, the Jumbo pair rallied to win the match with 6-1 and 6-2 victories.

Browne, named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Senior Player of the Year during the week, finished her outstanding collegiate career with the NCAA singles and doubles competition. In addition to being the 2010 national singles champ, she was a three-time NESCAC Player of the Year and two time ITA Small College Doubles champ with former teammate Meghan McCooey.
