JUMBO MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING TEAMS RAISE MORE THAN $24,000 FOR CANCER

MEDFORD - To date, the Tufts University men's and women's swimming teams have raised over $24,000 for cancer research with their participation at the 13th annual Swim Across America event at Nantasket Beach on July 16.

Swim Across America, Inc., (SAA) was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research through a variety of swim-related events.

The Tufts teams won the top team fund raising prize, and also received a silver cup emblematic as the MVP trophy for the team that most enthusiastically participates in the fund-raising and swimming. Thirty-four current swimmers and alums from Tufts participated this year, plus several others who raised money and could not attend the swim.

Tufts dedicated their efforts on behalf of Debbie Adams, the mother of senior captain Courtney Adams (Lake Forest, IL). She was diagnosed in May with stage four colorectal cancer. Courtney was the top individual fund raiser at close to $8,000.

The Jumbos combined with other New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) teams to raised approximately $38,000 and the total event raised more than $87,000. Overall, the Tufts teams have helped SAA raise close to $250,000 at the Nantasket Beach event over the last five years.

The Nantasket event features a recreational half-mile swim, and a one-mile course for the more competitive swimmers. Along the shores of beautiful Nantasket Beach, this event grows every year and includes college swim teams, club teams, recreational and masters swimmers and people who feel like having fun and doing some good.

In the women's mile race, Adams placed first overall, junior Christine Garvey (West Chester, PA) was second and senior Paulina Ziolek (Londonderry, NH) was third. In the men's race, sophomore Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT) was first, senior Lou Tamposi (Hernando, FL) was second and sophomore Austin Wood (Fort Washington, PA0 was third.
