Women’s Soccer Receives 1st Loss of Season 1-0 against MIT

SOMERVILLE - The Tufts University Women's Soccer team took a 1-0 loss against the MIT Engineers in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Kraft Field to end September.

Senior co-captain Alexa Pius helped the Jumbo defense allow two shots on goal

The Jumbos go into October with a record of 3-1-3, NESCAC 2-0-1, while the Engineers ended the day at 7-3, 1-1 in the NEWMAC.

In the 61st minute, MIT's Montana Reilly sent a free kick into the box which Olivia Struckman shot into the back of the goal to earn her sixth of the season to put the Engineers up to a 1-0 lead.

Early on Tufts had a close attempt, as senior Brooke Fortin passed the ball through defenders to wide open teammate Jess Capone that resulted in a save in the fifth minute of play.

Another good attempt came from MIT's Struckman whose kick right in front of the goal missed right after a pass from the corner of the field in the 15th minute.

A corner pass by Tufts sophomore Alessandra Sadler went into the box, but four teammates were just too late to come in from the left side to put the ball on goal.

MIT's Lauren Ullmann saved six shots to finish with her seventh win of the season and third shutout. Meanwhile Tufts' Emily Bowers saved one shot as the help of the Jumbos' defense allowed just two Engineer shots on goal.

The Jumbos stay home for Homecoming Weekend to play Amherst on Saturday at noon and Hamilton on Sunday at noon. The Engineers finish out September at home against Bowdoin for some Friday night action at 7 pm.
