WOMEN'S SOCCER DEALT TOUGH 1-0 LOSS AGAINST BATES

Sophomore Maeve Stewart had five shots in the game, including two on net

LEWISTON, ME -- First-year Dakota Donovan (Marblehead, MA) scored in the 67th minute to lift the Bates College Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in NESCAC women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Russell Street Field.

The game was well-played on both sides throughout its 90-minute duration, with the ball moving up and down both ends of the field. In the 67th minute, Bates midfielders Wally Pierce (Weston, MA) and Jaimie Cappucci (Saugus, MA) traded passes in a skillful surge up the left side of the field. Pierce then passed into the middle of the box, where Donovan won a loose ball and set up a left-footed shot into the left side of the net, where Tufts junior goalie Phoebe Hanley (Mamaroneck, NY) had no play.

Tufts turned up the heat over the final 12 minutes of the contest, keeping the ball mostly in the Bates end and attempting seven shots in that time, but Bates withstood the pressure to earn the win.

Bates senior Annie Burns (Topsfield, MA) made eight saves in the victory. Jumbos sophomore keeper Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) started and made three saves in the first half, while Hanley stopped two shots in the second half.

The Jumbos held a slight advantage in the shot department at 23-21. They were led by senior Alix Michael's (Mercer Island, WA) nine shots (two on net). Sophomore Maeve Stewart (Palo Alto, CA) had five shots (two on goal). Bates received six corner kicks while Tufts garnered five opportunities.

For Tufts, its their second straight 1-0 loss after losing to Williams on Saturday. The Jumbos stand at 6-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in NESCAC play and will continue league play on Saturday at Hamilton at 11:30 am. The Bobcats (5-4-2, 2-4-2 NESCAC) will host Middlebury on Saturday at 11 am.
