Co-captain Lauren O'Connor netted the game-winner

SOMERVILLE - The Tufts University Jumbos edged the Wesleyan University Cardinals, 1-0, on a second-half goal by senior co-captain Lauren O'Connor (Dudley, MA) in NESCAC women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Kraft Field.

The Jumbos controlled a scoreless first half, out-shooting Wesleyan 14-2. In the sixth minute, first year Alina Okamoto (Altadena, CA) tried to sneak the ball in the net, but Wesleyan first-year keeper Jessica Tollman (Brookline, MA) was able to cover the post.

Later in the 19th minute, senior Jamie Love-Nichols (Cortez, CO) fired a left-footed shot from left of the box, but again Tollman was able to cover the post.

Junior Alyssa Von Puttkammer (Park City, UT) had four of the 14 Jumbo shots in the first half, while off the bench sophomore Maeve Stewart (Palo Alto, CA) added three. Tollman made six saves in the first 45 minutes. Tufts sophomore goalie Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) made two stops.

Tufts did not wait long to gain the lone tally of the game in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Von Puttkammer had a free kick that was volleyed at the six-yard box where O'Connor took the ball and sent it into the twine for her first goal of the year.

Wesleyan had its best chance in the 73rd minute when Wright had to make a diving stop to her left to save a shot off the foot of junior Laura Kurash (Voorhees, NJ).

The Cardinals had better offensive pressure in the second half, getting off four shots for six total in the contest. Tufts still dominated, out-shooting Wesleyan for the game 22-6. Each keeper went the full 90 minutes. Tollman was impressive for the Cardinals with nine saves while Wright finished with four.
