|Charlotte Lenz skippered Tufts to a win in the seventh B race|
ORR'S ISLAND, MAINE – In the final regular-season regatta of the fall season, the Tufts University women's sailing team placed ninth out of 16 teams at the Victorian Coffee Urn event hosted by Bowdoin College on Harpswell Sound Saturday and Sunday.
With 14 races in two divisions, Tufts compiled scores of 125 in A's and 119 in B's for a 244 total. They were 14 points behind eighth-place Rhode Island (230) and 18 ahead of host and 10th-place Bowdoni (262). Brown University won the regatta with a 57-51-108 scoring line.
The Jumbos were ninth in both divisions. In A's, they had sophomore skipper Talia Toland with freshman crew Ann Sheridan and senior crew Taylor Hart. Sheridan crewed for the first through fourth races and ninth through 14th. Hart replaced her for the fifth through eighth starts. For B's, junior Charlotte Lenz skippered the first through 10th races and freshman Abbie Carlson skippered 11 through 14. Crew responsibilities were split up between sophomore Marly Hillman (1-2, 9-10), senior Sabrina Van Mell (3-8) and Hart (11-14).
Toland and Sheridan sailed to fourth place in the first A race, while the Toland-Hart combo was fourth in the sixth race. Lenz and Van Mell won the seventh B race and had a fourth-place in the fourth start of the division.
The 16 teams arrived Saturday to a moderate NE with little rain. The breeze ramped up as the day went on with rain changing to snow and sleet. The NE breeze allowed competitors to sail right off the pier and eight races were completed in each division.
Sunday started off equally as cold as Saturday with rain and breeze out of the North. The breeze shifted west as the day went on. Two races were completed in each division before a short break. Two more races where completed in each division in a westerly in Widgeon Cove. The final two races in each division were in a moderate southerly.
