Women's Sailing Takes Ninth in Spring Opener at St. Mary's College

Senior MaryClaire Kiernan skippered Tufts to a third in A division

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Led by a third-place finish in A division, the Tufts University women's sailing team scored ninth overall out of 18 teams at the annual St. Mary's Interconference Regatta.

Tufts, just outside of the top 20 in the Sailing Word College Rankings as of March 9, opened its spring season at the event. Tufts was sixth among New England teams at the regatta.

The Jumbos compiled scores of 83 in A's and 143 in B's for a 226 total. They were wedged tightly in between eighth-place Rhode Island (223) and 10th place St. Mary's (226). Boston College won the regatta with a 64-86-150 scoring line.

The Tufts A team of MaryClaire Kiernan as skipper and classmate Julia Fuller at crew was third out of the 16 teams. They won the 13th and final race in the division, while also posting thirds in the first and sixth starts.

The Jumbo B dinghy of junior skipper Molly Pleskus and sophomore crew Sabrina Van Mell finished 14th. They were the runner-up in the eighth race.
