MEDFORD - The 2015-16 Tufts University Women's Fencing team heads into the championship season this weekend as it travels to nearby Wellesley College on Saturday for the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) Championships.
The format of the event is team-oriented as member institutions enter teams as opposed to individuals. Team, squad, and individual champions are recognized.
A member of the Northeast Fencing Conference during the regular season, Tufts has a 6-6 record against conference opponents this season. Their wins have come against Boston University, Dartmouth, UMass, New Hampshire, Smith, and Wellesley.
Leading the Jumbos' epee group entering the weekend is junior Anna Gooch. She has 20 victories in 33 bouts, a 60.61 winning percentage that ranks 13th in the conference. Senior Julia Malleck (11 wins) and junior Chandler Coble (10 wins) have been Tufts' other leading contributors in the epee events.
The Jumbo foil group has been led by junior Juliet Hewes. She has 24 victories in 30 bouts for a 80.0 winning percentage, both team-bests which rank her fifth in the league. Sophomore Julia O'Gara (14 wins) and senior Laura Coughlin (nine wins) have joined Hewes in making the most foil starts for the Jumbos this season.
The sabre squad has been Tufts' most successful this season. Senior captain Alexandra Boden has 23 victories and a 65.77 winning percentage to rank 11th in the event for the conference. Sophomore Bridget Martuano's 21 wins and 60.00 winning percentage (14th in the conference), and 17th-ranked sophomore Nayan Ajaz's 20 victories and 57.14 winning percentage give Tufts a strong sabre line-up.
