Women's Fencing Defeats Dartmouth at Boston College Multi-Meet

Laura Coughlin had a 3-0 record in foil against Dartmouth

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - The Tufts University Women's Fencing Team defeated Dartmouth College, 17-10, during six matches of Northeast Conference play at Boston College on Saturday.

The win over Dartmouth was the only victory of the day for the Jumbos, though they lost tight 14-13 matches to both Vassar and MIT. Three other losses came versus Brown (22-5), Brandeis (19-8) and Boston College (18-9).

Against Dartmouth, Tufts won in the foil and sabre weapons. Senior Laura Coughlin won all three of her foil matches to lead the Jumbos to a 7-2 win in that round. Sophomore Julia O'Gara and junior Juliet Hewes played two foil matches apiece and won both.

In the 6-3 sabre win, senior captain Alexandra Boden, sophomore Nayab Ajaz and sophomore Bridget Marturano all posted 2-1 records to secure the victory.

Senior Julia Malleck was 2-1 in the epee matches against Dartmouth.

In the loss to Brown, Tufts won three matches in sabre as Bowden earned two of them.

Against Vassar, Tufts won in epee and sabre despite losing the match. The competitive results against MIT saw Tufts win 6-3 in foil.

The Jumbos recorded four wins in sabre and three in foil during the losses to both Brandeis and Boston College.

Tufts fences again on Sunday with a bout against NYU hosted by Brandeis.
