Tufts Women to Compete in Three Races at New England Rowing Championships

Natalia Kastenberg is one of just two seniors in the Jumbo line-ups

MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's rowing team is entered in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight races at the 2017 New England Rowing Championships (NERC) coming up on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.

The second varsity eight will be the first Tufts boat in the water. The Jumbos are in the first heat (10:30 a.m.) that also has Bates, Colby, Smith and Vermont. Places 1 and 2 go to the grand final, places 3 and 4 go to the petite final and place 5 goes to the third final. Tufts hopes to be in the 4:40 p.m. grand final. The 2V8 line-up will be junior coxswain Caroline Talbert, sophomore Erika Madrian, freshman Grace Fabrycky, freshman Laurel Haeger, sophomore Miriam Weiss, senior Hayley Cohen, sophomore Maddie Orzeske, sophomore Maia Tarnas and freshman Julia Turner. The Jumbo 2V8 bring a 6-4 record for 2017 into Saturday's races.

In the first varsity eight event, Tufts is in heat 3 (11:50 a.m.) with Williams, Amherst, Vermont, Coast Guard and Clark. Again, places 1 and 2 will go to the grand final, places 3 and 4 go to the petite final and place 5 goes to the third final. The grand final is slated for 5:40 p.m. The Jumbo boating for the 1V8 is junior Annelise Ryan, junior Emma Conroy, sophomore Libby Lichter, freshman Prairie Hammer, sophomore Miranda Finestone, freshman Camden Myles, sophomore Bibi Licaucho, junior Sera Busse and senior Natalia Kastenberg. Tufts has lost just once in first varsity eight races this season against 10 victories.

The women's novice eight will be a straight grand final at 3:30 p.m. due to the number of entries. The Jumbos will row against Smith, Amherst, University of New England, Connecticut College, Vermont and Wellesley. Tufts has freshman coxswain Jill Armenia, freshman Jiana Schnabel, sophomore Leah Stern, freshman Kathryn Luhrman, sophomore Alina McIntyre, sophomore Lauren Drohosky, freshman Glynnis Cummings, freshman Risa Williams and freshman Sidney Tanioka as its N8 line-up. Racing as the third varsity eight during the regular-season, Tufts posted a 4-4 record.

Both the Jumbo 1V8 and 3V8 (N8) finaled at the NERC last season and finished sixth. The second varsity eight rowed in the petite final and was ninth overall. In the women's point trophy standings, which combine all boats, the Jumbos placed seventh out of 29 with a 47.12 score.
