FIVE TUFTS WOMEN'S BOATS COMPETE AT 2011 NEW ENGLAND ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kara Breen rowed for the second varsity eight

WORCESTER - The Tufts University women's crew team competed at the annual New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday.

The Jumbo novice boats performed admirably. The novice eight placed sixth in the grand final with a 7:11.670 time across 2,000 meters. Eleven novice eights overall were in the regional race. The novice four won the petite final with an 8:29.655 time to finish seventh out of 12 overall.

The varsity eight boat rowed 7:07.834 for third in the place in the third final, 15th of 17 overall. The second varsity eight placed second in the petite final for eighth place overall out of 15 teams. Their time was 7:00.359. In the third varsity eight, the Jumbos were third in the petite final and ninth of 10 overall (7:43.165).

In the varsity eight race, the Tufts boat featured sophomore cox Audrey Abrell (Valparaiso, IN), sophomore stroke Ali Maykranz (Jackson, WY), sophomore 7-seat Kate Brena (London, EN), junior 6-seat Lily Carey (Beverly, MA), senior co-captain Rachel Steward (Kenmore, WA) in the 5-seat, sophomore 4-seat Caroline Patterson (Toronto, ON), junior 3-seat Maggie Debski (Pittsburgh, PA), junior co-captain Kathleen Holec (New Canaan, CT) in the 2-seat and senior Kaylee Maykranz (Jackson, WY) at the bow.

For the second varsity women, junior Gillian Hodes was the coxswain, junior Erika Parisi (Westport, CT) was the stroke, senior Alison Hodgkin (Norfolk, CT) was in the 7-seat, senior Barb Franco (Madison, WI) was in the 6-seat, junior Kara Breen (Springfield, MA) was in the 5-seat, senior Caccy Bowlus was in the 4-seat, Sarah Camitta (Wynnewood, PA) was in the 3-seat, senior co-captain Bianca Velayo (Levittown, NY) was in the 2-seat and sophomore Sheila Dave (Hillsborough, NJ) was the bow.

The Jumbos head back to Lake Quinsigamond next Sunday for the ECAC National Invitational Championships.
