MEDFORD - Three Tufts University boats won races as the Jumbo women's crew team competed against Hamilton College, Tulane University and the University of Vermont at their 2,000-meter home course on the Malden River Sunday morning.
The women's varsity eight won by nearly 25 seconds against Tulane University, with the Jumbos finishing in 7:43.8 and Tulane crossing the finish line in 8:08.3. In their race against Hamilton College, the Jumbo varsity eight lost a close contest with their time of 7:23.6 just seven seconds behind the Continentals' 7:16.4.
The Tufts women's varsity four had an 11-second victory against Hamilton, recording an 8:50.4 time against Hamilton's 9:01.2.
Tufts also split a pair of second varsity eight races. They won a tight race against Hamilton 7:15.4 to 7:19.5, but lost an even tighter row against Vermont 7:44.9 to 7:45.9.
The Tufts varsity eight included sophomore cox Audrey Abrell (Valparaiso, IN), sophomore stroke Ali Maykranz (Jackson, WY), sophomore 7-seat Kate Brena (London, EN), junioir 6-seat Lily Carey, senior co-captain Rachel Steward (Kenmore, WA) in the 5-seat, sophomore 4-seat Caroline Patterson (Toronto, ON), junior 3-seat Maggie Debski, junior co-captain Kathleen Holec (New Canaan, CT) in the 2-seat and senior Kaylee Maykranz (Jackson, WY) at the bow.
For the second varsity women, junior Gillian Hodes was the coxswain, junior Erika Parisi (Westport, CT) was the stroke, senior Alison Hodgkin (Norfolk, CT) was in the 7-seat, senior Barb Franco (Madison, WI) was in the 6-seat, junior Kara Breen (Springfield, MA) was in the 5-seat, senior Caccy Bowlus was in the 4-seat, sophomore Sheila Dave (Hillsborough, NJ) was in the 4-seat, senior co-captain Bianca Velayo (Levittown, NY) was in the 2-seat and senior Lindsay Hull (Seattle, WA) was the bow.
Abrell and Hodes switched as coxswains for the races against Tulane.
The varsity 4+ line-up was sophomore coxswain Sara Honickman (Rydal, PA), junior stroke Hannah Will, junior 3-seat Georgia Gunner (Harvard, MA), senior 2-seat Jenna Lohmann (Greenwood Village, CO) and junior bow Miriam Gutman.
