MEDFORD - Senior tri-captain Michela North and junior Melissa Baptista of the "Final Four" bound Tufts University women's basketball team were announced as D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region first team selections today.
Four Northeast All-Region teams were named overall and head coach Carla Berube's Jumbos are the only squad with two players on the first team. This is the third straight season that North has received a D3hoops Regional honor, and her second consecutive season on the first team. She was the Northeast Player of the Year last season and was a fourth-team pick as a sophomore in 2015. Baptisa was recognized by D3hoops with her first All-Region award.
While becoming Tufts' all-time leading scorer and rebounder this year, topping 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in the process, North is averaging 11.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game. She is coming off a huge 20-point, 15-rebound effort at WashU on Saturday when Tufts posted a 57-43 victory in the "Elite 8" to advance to the national semi-finals.
A key contributor at Tufts since her freshman season, Baptista has emerged as the Jumbos' leading scorer this year with 12.6 points per game. She's also the team leader with 43 three-pointers and 53 blocks. She scored a game-high 19 points with six rebounds in the NESCAC Championship Game at Amherst.
Earlier this month, North and Bapista were voted to the 2017 All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) first team. The Jumbos are currently ranked #4 in the D3hoops.com national poll.
Tufts is 29-2 overall and plays the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in the NCAA semi-finals at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday.
