|Ali Rocchi scored 10 points off the bench for Tufts
MEDFORD – The #8 seed Bowdoin College Polar Bears upset the #1 seed Tufts University Jumbos, 60-54, in the NESCAC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.
The Jumbos entered the weekend as the #7 team in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. They fall to 23-2. Bowdoin (14-10) moves onto the NESCAC semifinals next Saturday at Amherst.
Bowdoin led 29-25 at halftime as first-year Selena Lorrey (Kittery Point, ME) scored eight points off the bench, knocking down a pair of three-point shots. The Polar Bears were 6 of 12 from long range in the first half while the Jumbos shot 1 of 11 from beyond the arc. Kate Barnosky (Huntington Station, NY) netted nine points in the first half for Tufts.
Tufts had the lead a pair of times in the first half at 3-0 and 25-23. Back-to-back three-point shots by Lorrey and junior Kirsten Prue (Auburn, ME) gave Bowdoin the halftime advantage. The Polar Bears led by as many as seven points in the first half.
The Polar Bears pushed their lead to 11 at the 13:40 mark of the second half, 45-34, after a three by senior Kaitlin Donahoe (Amherst, NY). Over the next nine minutes the Jumbos went on a 16-4 to run. Senior Bre Dufault (Hampden, MA) gave Tufts the lead, 50-49, with a layup at the 4:23 mark.
Bowdoin fought right back with another three by Donahoe to go back up 52-50 before two free throws by Tufts sophomore Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) tied the score at 52. Sophomore Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, NY) put Tufts into the lead for the last time at 54-52.
Bowdoin scored the next four points at the charity stripe, going 4 for 6 at the line. The Polar Bears were on top 56-54 with 46 seconds remaining. Foley and sophomore Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, CA) each missed three-pointers for Tufts leading to four more Bowdoin free throws to seal the game.
Lorrey finished with a team-high 11 points for Bowdoin, shooting 4 for 8 from the field and 3 of 7 from three-point land. Sophomore Sara Binkhorst (West Hartford, CT) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Dufault led Tufts with 13 points and six rebounds while Barnosky finished with 11 points and eight boards. Junior Ali Rocchi (Fairfield, CT) checked in with 10 points.
Bowdoin outshot Tufts 41.5 percent (17/41) to 32.8 percent (22/67) and outrebounded the Jumbos, 38-35. The Polar Bears were a spectacular 11 for 19 from three-point territory. Tufts struggled from long range going 4 of 21.
The Jumbos, still likely to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, will await the NCAA announcement on Monday, February 25.
