Jumbo Softball Drops Third Straight with 6-3 Florida Loss to Fontbonne

CLERMONT, Fla. – Maddy Strickland's two-run single highlighted a four-run third inning and she also earned the pitching victory as Fontbonne University posted a 6-3 win over Tufts University in college softball action in Florida on Monday.

Kristen Caporelli had two hits for the Jumbos

The Griffins won both of their games on Monday to improve to 2-4 overall. Tufts has now lost three in a row and sits at 2-4 after three days in Florida.

Maddie Cooksey was 3 for 4 with three rbis at the top of the Fontbonne batting order. Courtney Kedroski finished 3 for 5.  Kayla Winkler scored two runs. The Griffins had 11 hits in all.

Junior RF Raven Fournier was 3 for 3 for Tufts, leading the Jumbos' nine-hit attack. Maggie Hoffman, Cassie Ruscz and Kristen Caporelli all had two hits for the Jumbos.

Both teams had two hits in the first inning, but neither could turn that into runs. A two-run double by Cooksey got the scoring started in the Griffins' second. Winkler (single) and Stickland (fielder's choice) both scored.

Tufts cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Junior 2B Samantha Siciliano walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kristen Caporelli. The Jumbos couldn't get Caporelli home from third with one out later in the inning.

The Griffins scored four times on three walks, two hits and a Tufts error in the third. They loaded the bases with no outs and Strickland's two-run single highlighted the inning in which Fontbonne took a 6-1 lead.

Tufts stranded two runners on base in the third, fifth and sixth innings. After Jumbo junior reliever Raina Galbiati left the bases loaded with Griffins in the top of the seventh, the Jumbos rallied. Hoffman and Ruscz hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Fournier than singled home a run and Siciliano hit a sac fly to make it 6-3, but the Jumbos would not get any closer.

Strickland went six innings allowing six hits and one run with three walks for Fontbonne.

Freshman Gillian O'Connor took the pitching loss for Tufts. Galbiati threw three solid innings of relief, allowing four hits and no runs with a strikeout.
