Clarkson University Slugs Softball 17-9 on Sunday in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Clarkson University had 21 hits in a six-inning game as the Knights won a softball slugfest, 17-9, over Tufts University on Sunday in Florida.

Carrie Copacino had two hits and two runs for Tufts

Junior SS Raeanna Dunn finished 3 for 6 with three runs scored and two rbis atop the Clarkson batting order, while senior C Ali Schwenzfeier went 2 for 3 with a home run, four rbis and three runs scored to lead the Knights (8-5). Senior LF Maggie Hoffman stayed red-hot for the Jumbos (2-2) going 4 for 4 with a run. Junior CF Carrie Copacino was 2 for 2 with two rbis and a run.

The Jumbos scored twice in the second inning on three hits and two Clarkson errors to lead 2-1. Copacino had an rbi single in the frame. However, Clarkson would take the lead for good in the next half-inning with a five-spot to lead 6-2. Schwenzfeier hit a three-run home run to center field capping the inning.

Tufts narrowed the margin to 6-4 with two in the third, as Hoffman doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Summer Horowitz was hit by a pitch. Sophomore SS Christian Cain followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Raven Fournier later in the inning.

A seven-run Clarkson fifth would give the Knights a 14-4 lead. Junior LF Bridget Woolley and Dunn both hit two-run singles with two outs in the inning. Tufts responded with five of its own in the bottom of the fifth, including a grand slam by Jamie Stevens. The home run was her second of the day after going deep against Buffalo State earlier on Sunday. After the teams combined for 12 runs in the fifth, Clarkson led 14-9.

The Knights tacked three more on in the sixth to take an eight-run lead (17-9). Senior DH Katie Pelton led off with a home run, while freshman 2B Kyrstin Messier and Woolley both hit run-scoring singles. When Tufts was held scoreless by Knights reliever Leah Allen in the bottom of the sixth, the game ended.

Summer Lancette, Erika Jensen, and Messier all joined Dunn with three hits for Clarkson. Jamie Bridge scored three times while Jensen had two runs. Woolley (3 rbis), Bridge (2 rbis) and Liz Caggiano all added to the production. Bridge took the pitching victory, her fourth of the year.

Cain went 2 for 3 with two runs. Eight different Jumbos scored runs in the game. Allison Tilton was the losing pitcher for Tufts.
