TUFTS SOFTBALL TRIO HONORED AS NFCA ALL-REGION PLAYERS FOR 2011 SEASON

MEDFORD - The heart of the Tufts softball team's batting order has been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on its 2011 Division III All-New England Teams. Junior 1B Lena Cantone (Southington, CT) and first year catcher Jo Clair (Glastonbury, CT) are on the First Team, while sophomore 2B Emily Beinecke (Concord, MA) earned a Second Team nod.
Cantone led the Jumbos with a .435 average, connecting for 64 hits in 147 at bats. She also had 34's in runs scored and runs batted in, while stealing 12 bases in 13 attempts. Beinecke finished at .374 with three home runs, 23 rbi and 17 runs scored. She fielded .962 at second base. Clair smashed a Tufts-record 16 home runs while hitting .361 with 42 rbi and 35 runs scored in 39 games. An at-large pick for the NFCA All-New England First Team, Clair leads New England in home runs.
Cantone and Beinecke have previous NFCA All-New England First Team honors on their resumes. Cantone was First Team in 2009 and Beinecke was on the First Team last season.
Tufts won the NESCAC East Division title again this spring, but lost to Middlebury in the conference final. The Jumbos finished at 23-18 overall.
All three of the All-New England recipients are expected back for the Jumbos in 2012.
