MARBLEHEAD - The Tufts University co-ed sailing team placed eighth at the 2018 New England Match Racing Championship on Saturday and Sunday.
The New England Match Racing regatta, where teams challenged for the Larry White Trophy, was co-hosted by MIT and the Corinthian Yacht Club. Racing began in rainy conditions on Saturday with a strong westerly averaging in the mid teens. The entire opening round robin was completed with Boston College remaining undefeated. The wind tapered as the sun set and 1.5 flights of the quarterfinals were completed. The format for Sunday was to complete the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals with a sail-off series for fifth through eight placings.
Sunday's conditions were sunny and a brisk westerly wind around 10 knots shifting left into the SW as the day went on, but with big oscillations throughout the racing. Quarterfinal racing wrapped with #1 seed BC advancing 2-0 versus #8 Northeastern, #4 Brown advancing 2-0 against #5 Tufts, #6 Dartmouth advancing 2-1 versus #3 Yale, and #2 Bowdoin advancing 2-1 against #7 MIT.
Semi-final action saw BC going 3-0 versus Brown, and Dartmouth and Bowdoin going a full five races to see Dartmouth win 3-2 to advance to the finals (and secure a berth to nationals). In the petit-finals, Bowdoin defeated Brown 2-1. In the finals, Dartmouth handed BC their first loss of the regatta in the opening flight with BC winning the 2nd race to set up a 3rd and deciding match. Dartmouth won a close race to win the 2018 New England Championship. Dartmouth and BC who advance to Nationals at Balboa Yacht Club in November.
