Jumbo Co-ed Sailing Team Takes 5th Place At ICSA Match Race National Championship

SAN FRANCISCO - The Tufts co-ed sailing team finished in the middle of the pack at the 2011 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Match Race Championship held at the St. Francis Yacht Club Friday through Sunday. The Jumbos were fifth out of 10 teams.

Competing for Tufts were sophomore skipper Will Haeger (Lake Forest, IL) with classmates David Liebenberg (Livermore, CA) at bow and Maggie Bacon (Mount Desert, ME) as trimmer.

The Jumbos had a good start to the championship regatta on Friday, finishing third-best in the field by winning seven of nine races. The only two losses came against Navy and Roger Williams, who were the top two teams in the Stage 1 Round Robin.

Advancing to a best two out of three quarterfinal knock-out round against South Florida, which had been sixth in the First Stage, Tufts lost the first two races and fell into a semi-final repechage. They defeated Michigan and then sailed in the fifth-place match against Wisconsin and won.

Overall, the Jumbos were successful with nine wins in 13 overall races. The match race regatta was the last action of the fall season for Coach Ken Legler's Jumbos. The 2011-12 season resumes in the spring.

The US Naval Academy won the national title.
