MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The #13 Wesleyan University men's tennis team defeated #15 Tufts on Saturday morning, 8-1. The NESCAC match-up took place in Middletown, Connecticut, and was the first of three Jumbo men's tennis matches this weekend.
Wesleyan started the match strong, taking a 3-0 lead in doubles play that featured two close contests. Princeton Carter and Tiago Eusebio took down Jumbos Rohan Gupte and Zain Ali at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Cardinals duo Win Smith and Adrian Roji defeated Nathan Niemiec and Carl-Herman Grant in the No. 2 match, 8-4.
Wesleyan continued their strong showing in singles play. Chen, #14 in ITA rankings, added to his doubles success with a 6-4, 7-6 win over #34 Rohan Gupte at No. 1. Ali fell to seventh-ranked Andrew Finkelman in the No. 2 tilt, 6-4, 6-2. Sorkin gave the Jumbos their lone win of the day at No. 3, defeating Eusebio 6-3, 6-0.
Daniels picked up his second win of the day at No. 4, besting Grant 6-3, 6-1. Niemiec took the first set of the No. 5 matchup, but ultimately fell to Wesleyan's Roji 2-6, 6-0, 10-2. Jumbos senior Danny Coran fell to Carter in the No. 6 contest, 6-1, 6-0.
Tufts is back in action tomorrow with a pair of NESCAC matches, as they will play at Hamilton at 9:00 a.m. The Jumbos will also play a 1:00 p.m. contest at Williams College. The Cardinals will also turn around and play tomorrow morning, facing Swarthmore at 11:00 a.m.
