SAN DIEGO – The No. 13 Tufts University men's tennis team opened up the 2017 portion of its season in style, as the Jumbos went undefeated in doubles action during a 6-3 triumph over host Point Loma on Saturday in San Diego.

Freshman Zach Shaff led the way for the Jumbos, going 2-0 during season-opening action, as he was victorious in No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles.
Juniors Griffin Brockman and Rohan Gupte led the Jumbos (1-0) in No. 1 doubles, as the pair defeated junior CJ Erion and freshman Jesse Miritello, 8-5. Shaff and senior captain Ben Battle emerged victorious in No. 2 doubles action, by outlasting junior Brendon Millington and freshman Yuki Okamoto, 8-3.
The Sea Lions responded with a strong showing in singles action, claiming victories in No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches. Millington won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, over Gupte in No. 1 singles. Erion defeated Ali, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 2 singles, and then junior Jack Alston outperformed junior Danny Coran, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 3 singles.
Shaff won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, against Okamoto in No. 4 singles, and then freshman Nathan Niemiec posted a crucial three-set victory, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6, against Miritello in No. 5 singles. Rounding out the Jumbos' performances was senior captain Kevin Kelly winning, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 6 singles against freshman Mark Penner.
The Jumbos will take on the College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California, on Sunday at 2 p.m. The team's home opener is slated for April 1 at noon against NESCAC Conference-rival Amherst.
