NESCAC Win for Men's Tennis Over Hamilton Saturday Afternoon

Ryan Rosen won in singles and doubles play for the Jumbos against Hamilton on Saturday


CLINTON, NY – The Tufts men's tennis team split its squad on Saturday afternoon, and came away with a win at NESCAC rival Hamilton, 6-3.  The other half of the squad played at #3 Williams and fell, 7-2. The Jumbos found themselves down to the Continentals 2-1 after doubles play, but took five of six singles matches to secure their second NESCAC win of the season.

Freshman Ryan Rosen (La Jolla, CA) and fellow classmate Benjamin Battle (Delray Beach, FL) earned a win for the Jumbos at #2 doubles, defeating the Hamilton duo of Matt Billet and Ian Antonoff, 8-3.  The matches at #1 doubles and #3 doubles were both decided by an 8-4 score as sophomore Roy Peleg (Herzliya, Israel) and senior Jake Lazarus(Prospect, KY) fell at the #1 position, and freshman Austin Bendetson (Andover, MA) and senior Zach Ladwig (Chelmsford, MA) fell at #3 doubles.

The Jumbos rebounded in singles play, taking five of six singles matches to secure the 6-3 win. At #1 singles Ladwig topped Hamilton's James Oliver, 6-4, 7-5.  Freshman Kevin Kelly (Ashburn, VA) earned a win for the Jumbos at #2 singles, topping the Continentals' Ben Swett, 6-3, 6-3.  Cruising to a win at #3 singles was Peleg, who topped his Hamilton counterpart, 6-0, 6-2.

Rosen found himself in a hole early at #4 singles, but rebounded nicely to eventually earn a win over Billet, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.  The last win for the men came at #6 singles as sophomore Josh Girson (Prairie Valley, KS) also rebounded from an early deficit to come back and earn the 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win.  Lazarus rounded out the Jumbos singles lineup at #5 and lost a heart breaker to Antonoff, 7-6, 2-6, 10-7.

With the win the Jumbos move to 6-5 on the season and 2-3 in NESCAC action while Hamilton now owns a 7-6 record, with an 0-3 conference mark.  The Jumbos will be back in action on April 10 as they host Connecticut College at 3:30 pm.  The Continentals will take the courts again on April 12 when they host Colby for a 2:00 pm showdown.
