MEDFORD – Three members of the Tufts University men's lacrosse team were recognized this week as Inside Lacrosse Division III Men's Preseason All-Americans.

Junior midfielder Nick Shanks is one of 13 selections to the first team, while senior attack Danny Murphy and senior defenseman Arend Broekmate are both on the second team.

Only three teams in the nation have more Division III Preseason All-American selections than the Jumbos.

Shanks was one of four midfielders on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America first team last spring, and was the only New England middie. One of the most explosive and athletic midfielders in the country, he transitioned from a D-middie and scored 38 goals with 12 assists for 50 points in 2018. A New England  Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-New England first team pick and a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Conference second teamer, Shanks played his best in the biggest games including scoring four goals against Ithaca and four more versus Wesleyan in the NCAA Tournament.

Murphy, a second team All-American last spring, led the Jumbos and was top 20 nationally in points per game with a 100-point season (45 goals-55 assists). His 2.75 assists per game were the 13th-best mark in the country for Division III. A first team NESCAC All-Conference selection and on the NEILA second team, Murphy scored six goals with three assists for nine points in a late-season win over Bowdoin. He had five assists in four games, including a 3-5-8 scoring line in a NESCAC Tournament win over Middlebury.

An honorable mention All-American last year, Broekmate was a leader of the stout Jumbo defense last spring. His 56 ground balls were second-most on the squad behind face-off man Henry Hollen, and he also caused 20 turnovers. The junior was a threat offensively as well with four goals and two assists, in addition to aiding Tufts' successful clearing game (.882). He scored, had seven groundballs and caused two turnovers in a season-opening NESCAC victory at Hamilton.

Head coach Casey D'Annolfo's Jumbos open their 2019 season on March 2 at Hamilton.
