MEDFORD - Scoring 8.5 points per game in two contests last week, sophomore attackman Danny Murphy of the Tufts University men's lacrosse team was selected as the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) / BSN Sports Division III North Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Murphy scored six goals with two assists in Tufts' 22-13 NESCAC win over Williams College on April 5. He followed that with five goals and four assists in the Jumbos' 18-6 conference victory against Hamilton College on April 8. For the week, he tallied 11 goals and six assists for 17 points.
The two wins put Tufts at 11-0, the best start to a season in program history. The Jumbos are 6-0 in NESCAC, tied with Bates College for first place. Tufts and Bates are two of the three undefeated teams in NCAA Division III men's lacrosse including Salisbury.
Murphy ranks ninth in the nation for Division III with 5.45 points per game. He has 35 goals and 26 assists for 61 points in Tufts' 11 games. He currently leads the NESCAC in scoring and has 17 goals with 17 assists in the six conference games (5.67 points per game).
This is the second straight year that Tufts has had a USILA DIII North Offensive Player of the Week. John Uppgren, currently an assistant coach for Tufts, was recognized on April 6 of last season.
