MALDEN - The Tufts University men's rowing team's first novice eight won both of its races to lead the Jumbos to five victories overall on Saturday at Malden River.

Rowing in the third varsity eight semi-finals to start their day, the Jumbo 1N8 defeated Wesleyan with a 6:18.7 time across 2,000 meters compared to 6:30.3 for the Cardinals. The 1N8 then faced the Tufts 3V8 in the final and won 6:06.9 to 6:11.1.
The 2-0 Tufts 1N8 lined up bow to stern with freshman coxswain Emily Kim followed by sophomore Hayes Ward, freshman Ross Hamilton, sophomore Jordan Bacher, freshman Peter Malinovsky, freshman Mitchell Kogansky, freshman Dean Ericksen, freshman Sam Agnew and freshman Matthew Agurcia.
The 3V8, which had defeated Bates 6:14.0 to 6:22.9 in the semifinals, featured senior coxswain Connor Fallon, sophomore Rohail Rai, sophomore Ryan Magnuson, junior Hani Chkess, sophomore Alec Whipple, sophomore Edmund Takata, junior Andrew Takasugi, sophomore Samson Braun and senior John Bailey.
The Jumbo first varsity eight was defeated by Bates in the semi-finals early in the day. Tufts' time of 6:02.8 was 10 seconds behind the Bobcats' 5:52.6. However, the Jumbos earned a split on the day as they took the petite final over the University of New Hampshire 5:57.6 to 6:16.3.
Tufts' varsity eight line-up had sophomore coxswain Hannah Frankel, freshman Graham Forrester, freshman Paul Gelhaus, sophomore Nick Hartman, sophomore Rich Gilland, sophomore Mats Edwards, junior Tyler Hagedorn, senior Doug Burt and junior Andrew MacMillen.
Similar to the varsity eight, the Tufts second varsity lost the semi-final race to Bates in a close contest (5:59.4 to 6:03.2). The Jumbos then rebounded in the petite final for a near 30-second win over New Hampshire 5:52.5 to 6:21.6.
Rowing for the Jumbo 2V8 were sophomore coxswain James Grant, senior Zach Merchant, senior Tyler McCullough, junior Ashton Knight, sophomore Chandler Glass, freshman Adrian Tanner, sophomore Isaac Mudge, senior Jeremy Slavitz and sophomore James Miller.
The Jumbos head to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester for the first time this season next Sunday (Apr. 23) for Baker Cup races against WPI, Skidmore and Washington College.
