Jumbo Men's Crew Finishes Fall Season At Head Of The Fish Regatta In New York
SARATOGA, NY - Tufts University Crews rebounded from the Head of the Charles in strong fashion Saturday with multiple medal-winning and high finishes at the Head of the Fish Regatta.
With wind and snow in the wings, the Jumbos collected three sets of coveted Fish Heads, awarded traditionally to all event winners, along with three silvers and a pair of fourth places in an overall strong showing.
Senior Maggie Debski won a coveted Fish Head with a victory in the Women's Novice Singles. Junior Kapri Waling finished a strong third and sophomore Caroline Ricard eighth in a field of of eight first-year scullers.
More coveted Fish Heads were awarded to the Women's Collegiate Quad of junior Caroline Patterson, senior Lilia Carey, junior Catherine Brena and senior Kathleen Holec, with additional strong finishes by the following in an 11-boat field:
6th place - Miriam Gutman, Georgia Gunner, Caitlin Meeks, and Virginia Trumbull;
9th place - Rachel Filer, Catherine Winslow, Georgiana Burruss, and Emily Port.
The Women's Lightweight Eight captured nine Fish Heads by defeating the University of Massachusetts. The Eight, comprised of sophomore Jennifer Mui, sophomore Sonia Chokshi, sophomore Rachael Filer, senior Miriam Gutman, senior Hannah Will, senior Georgia Gunner, junior Caroline Patterson, senior Kathleen Holec, and senior Erika Parisi bested the Minutewomen by 52 seconds over the 4,400-meter course.
Tufts Men's Collegiate Lightweight Four finished a strong second to Williams in a field of six crews for the best finish by Tufts Men in Saturday's action. Ben Kane, Carter Palmer, Denis Richard, Jeffrey Thibodeau and coxswain Jessie Howard had a strong race from wire to wire.
Tufts showed mastery in the Women's Collegiate Doubles, with a dominating performance in the field of 11 boats. Juniors Kate Brena and Caroline Patterson turned in a stellar silver-medal performance, with the rest of the Tufts fleet finishing as follows:
4th place - sophomores Caitlin Meeks and Caroline Ricard;
5th place - seniors Erika Parisi and Hannah Will;
7th place - sophomore Georgiana Burress and Emily Port;
8th place - junior Katie Fitzgerald and sophomore Virginia Trumbull
In the Women's Collegiate Single, senior Kathleen Holec finished fourth, followed by classmates Lily Carey in seventh and Georgia Gunner in ninth.
Tufts Men's Collegiate Fours (all members of the sophomore class except as noted) finished in the middle of the field (15th and 16th out of 32), with the four of junior Chris Park, Tim Peng, Luke Abdow, Mike Bai, and coxswain Jessie Howard besting the four of junior Kyle Flood, junior Will Hickey, Denis Richard, Ian McConnell and coxswain Jeremy Rosenblatt by four seconds.
In the final event of Saturday's racing as the Nor'Easter clouds loomed in the Southeast, the Tufts Mixed Collegiate Eight medaled silver with a second-place finish in a six-boat field. Senior Gillian Hodes, senior Sang Wook "Chris" Park, junior William Hickey, junior Kyle Flood, junior Michael Bai, senior Kara Breen, senior Lilia Carey, sophomore Rebecca Perrin, and senior Margaret Debski put the cap on a long day of great racing.
In additional racing the Men's Collegiate Eight finished 12th of 15, two Women's Lightweight Doubles finished 4th and 5th in a five-boat field.
