MEDFORD – After a earning a save and a win on the mound in the same day, freshman Aidan Tucker of the Tufts University baseball team was selected as this week's New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Pitcher of the Week today.
Tucker helped the Jumbos earn both a double-header sweep and a series sweep in NESCAC East Division action versus Bowdoin College on Saturday. He had a save in a 5-4 game-one victory, then returned to the mound to start game two and got the win in a 16-0 Jumbo victory. The wins improved Tufts to 5-1 in the NESCAC East and 18-5 overall.
For the two outings, Tucker pitched eight innings allowing four hits and no runs with nine strikeouts and a walk. After the Jumbos took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth in the opener (7-inning gane) on Saturday, Tucker pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh including two strikeouts to finish off the win. He was outstanding in his game-two start allowing just four hits and no runs in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked only one. Bowdoin had its best threat in the first with runners on second and third with one out, but Tucker got the next two on a pop-up and a strikeout to leave the runners stranded.
The win improved his record to 4-0 and the save was his second. He's tied for the second-most victories among NESCAC pitchers, is sixth in total appearances (10), and is fourth with 28 strikeouts. He's averaging 8.69 strikeouts per nine innings.
Tucker is the second Jumbo pitcher to win the NESCAC award this season as junior teammate Brent Greeley was named on March 18. He is the first freshman Jumbo to win a conference weekly award since teammate R.J. Hall was Pitcher of the Week in March 2016.
