Baseball and Bates Split NESCAC East Pair on Saturday at Huskins

MEDFORD – Three Jumbo pitchers held Bates to one earned run in the first game, then Bobcat senior DH Justin White had two hits and scored a pair of runs in the nightcap as Tufts and Bates split a NESCAC East baseball double-header on Saturday at Huskins Field. The Jumbos took the seven-inning opener 4-2 before Bates earned the split 6-5 in the second game.

Spencer Langdon earned his third save in the first game.

Tufts wins the weekend series 2-1 overall and improves to 11-3 and 2-1 in the NESCAC East. Bates is now 6-8 and 1-2 in the division.

Junior Brent Greeley, freshman Steven Landry and junior Spencer Langdon limited the Bobcats to four hits in the first game. Greeley (3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER) improved to 3-0 with the victory, while Langdon (2 IP, 0 H, 0R) picked up his third save.

Tufts got up 2-0 on Bates starter Jared Pantalony in the second inning. Jumbo junior LF Ryan Day was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch, then junior 3B Speros Varinos singled home a run. The Jumbos added two more in the third. Freshman 1B Peter DeMaria hit an infield single with one out and went to second on an error during the play. He scored on senior catcher Harrison Frickman's double to right. Frickman then came around on the Bobcats' second error of the inning during a base hit by Day.

Bates narrowed the margin to 4-1 with an unearned run in the fourth. Junior 3B Giovanni Torres walked with one out, took second on a Jumbo error and scored on freshman 2B Andrew Chi's single. The Bobcats rallied with two outs in the fifth to get within two. Junior catcher Jack Arend singled and scored when White followed with a double making it 4-2.

Langdon and Bates senior Brendan Smith (3 IP, 1 H, 0R) were good in late relief. Tufts twice had the bases loaded with two outs on Smith, but he got the outs he needed. He allowed just one hit in his three innings. Langdon struck out three in two frames.

Varinos went 3 for 3 with an rbi as Tufts out-hit Bates 8-4 in the first game. DeMaria finished 2 for 2.

Bates led 6-1 in the second game and had to hold on to win 6-5. Arend, sophomore 1B Noah Loughlin and junior RF Jon Lindgren had three hits apiece as the visitors out-hit the Jumbos 12-9.

White's ground out scored sophomore CF Christian Beal, who had led off the game with a single, in the first. Lindgren doubled home Torres to give Bates a 2-0 lead in the second. Bates then struck for three in the top of the third to lead 5-0. Loughlin doubled home a run and scored. After Tufts scored a single run in the third, Bates increased the margin to 6-1 in the fifth as White singled and scored on a sac fly.

Tufts began chipping away, getting two in the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Frickman and senior SS Will Shackelford. They closed to within 6-5 on unearned runs in the sixth and seventh, including an rbi single from freshman pinch-hitter Nate Bozzella in the sixth.

Bates senior reliever Alex Simon would hold Tufts there, getting a key double-play ball in the eighth and finishing the game with 1.2 innings allowing no hits and no runs. Senior Justin Foley earned the win for Bates allowing three earned runs and not walking a batter in six innings.

For Tufts in game two, Shackelford was 2 for 4 with two runs and an rbi, Day drove in two with an rbi and Bozzella was 2 for 2 after entering in the sixth. Sophomore starter Manny Ray took the loss for Tufts. Freshmen Aidan Tucker (2 IP, 0 H, 0R), Harsha Bollu and Michael Volgende were strong in relief for Tufts late.

The Jumbos are back at it on Monday for a single game against Salem State. Bates plays next at Husson on Tuesday.
