Baseball Edged at Salem State in Non-League Play, 7-5

SALEM – Junior Joe White went 3 for 4 including an inside the park home run leading Salem State University baseball to a 7-5 win over Tufts University in non-conference play Monday afternoon.

Justin Mills had two hits and two rbis for Tufts

White had four rbis overall as the the Vikings improved to 12-5. Senior Alex Toomey went 2 for 5 with two rbis and two runs for Salem.

The Jumbos (7-7) left 13 runners on base for the game. They were led by junior Casey Santos-Ocampo, who finished 2 for 5 and scored twice.

Tufts got out in front with a run in the second. Santos-Ocampo led off with a double to left-center, took third on a fielder's choice and scored unearned on a Viking error.

Salem tied the game 1-1 in the fourth when Kyle O'Connor was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He then took second on a wild pitch and scored when White singled to center.

It was a pitcher's duel through five and a half innings between Salem junior Brock Riley and Tufts freshman Jamie Weiss. However, White put the hosts up 4-1 with the two-run inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Salem scored three in the sixth inning overall, with O'Connor again setting the table. He reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Toomey's single to left giving the hosts a 2-1 lead. White then circled the bases for his home run with Toomey scoring ahead of him.

The Jumbos answered in the top of the seventh with two runs to narrow the gap to 4-3. Sophomore CF Justin Mills continued to produce by hitting an rbi single that scored junior catcher Eric Schnepf, who had led off with a walk. Tufts loaded the bases with one out and got one more when senior RF Malcolm Nachmanoff hit a sacrifice fly.

The Vikings got both runs back in the bottom of the inning. Pat Fitzgerald doubled to center field leading off and took third on a fly out. He scored on Toomey's double to right-center. White followed with a single scoring Toomey and Salem led 6-3.

Tufts loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth on a Santos-Ocampo single and two walks. Sophomore Elias Varinos singled home a run to close Tufts within 6-4, then Mills followed with a sac fly as Tufts trimmed the margin to 6-5. However Viking reliever Ed Duran was able to hold the lead with a ground out and strikeout sandwiched around a hit by pitch to end the inning.

Salem added an insurance run after two were out in the eighth on singles by RJ Warnock, Fitzgerald and Mac Daniel Singleton. The Jumbos put the potential tying runs on base in the ninth, but Duran finished off his save with a ground out.

Singleton and Fitzgerald both had two hits for Salem. Riley (6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R) gets the win.

Mills was 2 for 4 with two rbis for Tufts. Senior 3B Tommy O'Hara was also 2 for 4. Weiss (6 IP, 5 H, 4 R) took the loss.

Tufts is at MIT on Thursday while the Vikings play at Endicott tomomrrow.
