Guilford Pulls Away for 11-6 Victory over Baseball in North Carolina Monday

GREENSBORO, NC – Guilford College had 18 hits, four by leadoff man Josh Shepherd, in an 11-6 college baseball win over Tufts University Monday afternoon at Edgar McBane Field.

Tommy O'Hara had two hits and two rbis for Tufts

Tufts (3-2) never led, but had pulled within 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning. However, the Quakers (10-8-1) scored three in the seventh and three more in the eighth to keep the Jumbos at bay.

All nine Guilford starters had hits including three by Michael Pinkson and two each by Brett Shapcott, Mitchell Stumpo, Trevor Denton and Ryan Hill.

Senior 3B Tommy O'Hara was 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run for Tufts. Senior RF Malcolm Nachmanoff finished 2 for 5 with an rbi and a run scored.

Guilford scored three in the first two innings off Tufts starter Ian Kinney. Shepherd singled and scored on a base hit by Denton in the first. Two-out singles by Pinkston and Hill in the second were proceeded by rbi base hits from Shepherd and Shapcott for a 3-0 Quakers margin.

Tufts got on the board in the fourth when senior 1B Nick Falkson led off with a single. He advanced to third on singles by Nachmanoff and junior DH John Moschella, then scored on a double play ball.

The Quakers built their advantage to 5-1 in the fifth as Shapcot reached on an error and Stumpo singled. They scored on a single by Denton and a sac fly from Rocco Wilcox, respectively.

Tufts pulled within one as O'Hara and Nachmanoff doubled in a two-run sixth, then junior SS Will Shackelford walked with one out in the seventh, stole second and scored on a single by sophomore LF Ryan Day.

The Jumbos' momentum was short-lived though. Wilcox led off the Guilford seventh with a triple and then scored on a passed ball. Hill squeezed home a run and Shepherd hit an rbi double later in the inning. In the eighth, Quakers Logan King, Pinkston and Hill all hit rbi singles.

O'Hara hit a two-run single for Tufts in the ninth, but that would be all for the Jumbos.

Shepherd, Denton and Hill all had two rbis for Guilford. Pinkston and Sam Gerald scored twice. Sophomore starter Zach Dinkins won his first game of the season going five innings allowing six hits and two runs. Sophomore Brody Holloman entered with Guilford leading 5-4 in the seventh and got seven outs for a save.

Shackelford scored twice for Tufts. One of three Tufts pitchers, Kinney (4 IP, 7 H, 3 R) took the loss.

Tufts is off tomorrow before resuming its busy week on Wednesday at Methodist. Guilford is at Roanoke on Wednesday night.
