HAMPTON, Va. – Luke Tyree hit a second-inning grand slam that gave Marymount University a lead it would not relinquish in a 10-4 baseball victory over Tufts at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The Jumbos (1-1) had taken a 3-0 lead in the first two innings led by an rbi single from senior Malcolm Nachmanoff and a two-run single from junior CF Casey Santos-Ocampo. However, after Jumbo starter Elias Varinos walked the bases loaded with two outs, Tyree's grand slam put the Saints ahead 4-3. Conner Hall followed with a double and Jake Mellor singled to make it 5-3.
After a 1-2-3 third, the Saints added single runs in the fourth and fifth to extend their margin to 7-3. Michael Wade led off the fourth with a single, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Hall. Austin Sizemore doubled to begin the fifth, was balked to third and scored on a sac fly by Cal Berman.
Tufts senior Nick Falkson led off the fifth with a home run pulling the Jumbos within 7-4, but that's as close as they would get.
Marymount (7-5) pulled away with three in the sixth with the help of two walks, two wild pitches and a Tufts error in the frame. Mellor also delivered his second rbi single of the game. He led the Saints with three hits.
Jumbo pitching gave up 11 hits and eight walks while throwing four wild pitches. Freshman Jamie Weiss finished up with four innings allowing two hits and an unearned run with seven K's. Santos-Ocampo and Nachmanoff both had a pair of hits for Tufts, which finished with eight overall.
Freshman Ryan Bergenhagen earned the win in relief of starter Collin Bazemore for the Saints.
Tufts finishes its weekend at War Memorial Stadium with a pair of games on Sunday versus St. Vincent (10 a.m.) and Marymount again (4 p.m.). In addition to playing the Jumbos, the Saints also face host Apprentice School Sunday at 1 p.m.
